Expedia Sucks

January 2, 2001

I get around a bitI have been trying for the past two months to delete and any all of my information from Expedia.

Easy right? Wrong. I am “legacy” since I used them when they launched.

Since this is a hard thing to do I still get stupid spams from them after opting out several times that concern flights that I would never take.

When I used them in the past I had about 60% success with them but having to put in a procmail filter for a service you signed up for just pisses me off big time. I just send things to my spam catcher email address.

I kept getting a message about “We are unable to blah blah blah” when I would try to delete my account.

So, after getting very pissed and knowing what others have gone through with them I sent a very long and nasty email to them detailing

1) how I have been a good customer

2) how I have used them since their launch

3) how things have just gotten worse and worse with the service

4) how they fscked friends using their service

Here is what I got back today. Notice that the only thing they picked up on was 4. It still reads like an auto-response.

Argh, thats horrendous!

In the UK we have the Data Protection Act that 'covers' things like this - people have the right to have personal information to be removed upon request. I presume the US Intellectual Property law may be the same? US also has the Can Spam Act (2003) that sets the rules for commercial email.

The reason i'm stating these is that you could always send them an email threatening legal action if they fail to remove you and your personal data, as they obviously aren't complying with regulations. Atleast it will make them sit up!

Good luck.. James
