Facebook Hates Email

November 20, 2009

Update: January 12, 2010 Hell freezes over

Background: TechCrunch is having their RealTime CrunchUp event and solicited comments from the founder of Gmail, FriendFeed — Paul Buchheit — now at Facebook. Comments don’t appear to be working so… as I was trying to say:

Facebook has demonstrated very clearly (so far) that their approach to “email” is that it only has a place within their silo — or at best as a one way notification to any other email service.

Too Much Text

The swatting away of my question at TC50 by the Facebook “outreach” team on noreply@facebookmail.com vs. the elegance of FriendFeed really summed it up as follows:

Facebook Hates Email

I’ve got plenty of opinions on email and the future but Facebook has done nothing visible to endear, promote, or improve “email” [1]

My only reservation in all out condemnation of Facebook’s approach to email is that Paul is in their house now. Whatever that means… it does offer some amount of hope.

[1] feel free to serve up crow filled links to refute this

Good job Facebook (Friendfeed)
