Union Square, May 27, 2009 UPDATE: Winners Announced!!!

@TriDroid membership of 155 eager developers will receive the HTC EVO. Congrats!
@BrandonSmith will receive the Motorola Droid. Congrats!

Last week I attended Google I/O. It was my second time. Last year the “Oprah moment” was the T-Mobile (GSM) HTC Magic G2 for all paid attendees. Shortly after the event I donated this device to a developer that was interested in Android development. It seemed only fitting since I won my ticket from a TechCrunch contest.

phonesThis year I paid to attend since last year was such a blast — and this time it was a double whammy. First, a Verizon (CDMA) Motorola Droid was sent to me ahead of the conference (others were sent the GSM option of a Nexus One) . But wait… there’s more! Then during the conference all attendees were supplied with a Sprint (CDMA) HTC EVO 4G.

Now I need your help in donating both of these Android phones…

To recap, Google I/O sent me one of each of the following:

I’m donating both to a worthy cause — Android developers.

These phones will only be fully useful in the US as they are CDMA based US carrier handsets so the contest is limited to the US. Sorry international folks!

The contest will have a winner prize (HTC EVO 4G) and a runner up prize (Motorola Droid) and since this the US — one winner can take all.

Contest details:

  • Leave a comment below that outlines why you deserve to win and what you’ll develop with your Android device
  • “Share this comment” on Twitter or optionally tweet back to your comment using Twitter hash tag #fudge

If you want to combine your efforts as a team that is also acceptable and encouraged. Again, you can win both if you demonstrate why you should win both devices.

I’ll personally review each comment and announce the winner(s) as an update to this post on Tuesday June 8, 2010 and I will FedEx to you (or your team) the phone(s) after the announcement.

Note: Special considerations will be made for those developers that are already developing for the iPhone with the intention of porting to Android. A vibrant and varied developer ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem!

Sveet, thanks Jay! You are the man!

I am happy to say that @BrandonSmith will receive the Motorola Droid. Congrats!

I am happy to say that @TriDroid membership of 155 eager developers will receive the HTC EVO. Congrats!

I love the phones will be put to good use. Great idea, Jay! Can't wait to see who wins it.

That would be a very useful application. Good luck!

Hello, I'm a biology graduate and programming hobbyist. I'm about to apply for graduate school in the field of bioinformatics and I thought developing a mobile app would be a great start.

I would like to create an app that will convert chemical compound drawing into their proper name(IUPAC nomenclature) and vice versa. The user can either take a picture of the drawing or use a built-in paint program to draw the compound structure.

Cool... Thanks :o)

That's fine. I don't hold anyone accountable for the availability and/or efficacy of Twitter search :)

Hey Jay,

Just something quick... As per your contest details, to u00e2u0080u009cShare this commentu00e2u0080u009d on Twitter, I have posted a link to my comment above on twitter and added #fudge in there as well, but while I can see my posting on my twit feed, I cannot find it in the search that is done by clicking on the "#fudge" link, can you advise if you can find it, perhaps please... I would be disappointed to miss out, because of this :s

Librarians rock! Good luck!

I like the reference to porting from iPhone to Andoid. Good luck!

This is a very noble cause indeed. Good luck!

Well, there are many improvements / interesting ideas that I can think of for the Android platform, but I must say there is one area of improvement that I would like to attack first (and, as per the many hours I have researched this topic on the interwebs, others seem to wish it was improved also)... The functionality / availability of the Android Market... I don't have an Android currently (Before discovering this offer, thought I would have to wait until I became employed again), but I have several friends with them (I like to think I had a small part to play in this :) and the below I found quite frustrating when I have tried lending a hand, to help them gain more functionality with their Android's:

* Market categories are not defined enough (i.m.o)... Having a dozen or so categories cannot hope to describe the hugely varied assortment of apps that are conceivable on a modern-day computing device, to allow one to only look at apps that do the exact function the user is looking for (i.e., Under "Tools" you have password managers, app lockers, measuring apps, unit conversion apps, etc... and they are all mixed up together, see next point)
* No sorting of apps in the Market, nor in Market searches (i.e., By downloads, by newest, by star rating, by price, etc)
* No offline (i.e., via HTTP, not only on a Android device) listing of apps... at least I haven't found one that is comparable in terms of current information + complete listing, as the Market accessible via an Android handset

I am sure I could think of more ways to improve upon the existing Market (to start with), to make it more inline with the greatness that I think is the Android platform, if only I had a device to dev + beta test with.

Hence, I think, as no-one to-date seems to have tackled with the issues above (and many more, in regards to the Market, others in the online community have posted & blogged about), when I am able to get my hands on one of these devices, I would pay forward the generosity of Jay and try and make others lives easier by solving perceived inadequacies, like the above.

P.S After reading through all the other comments above, I personally think enough good ideas been suggested, that this competition should see two great ideas come to life!

Why I deserve to win? Because, I'll be a new addition into this arena. Winning means there is added pressure to produce and, frankly, I need to branch out. In the face of the long-term cost of a data plan, the hardware itself is not that big of an expense. However, if I were to simply go out and buy one, it would not have the same results. What I'm looking to develop? First, I really need to get some face time with one. I need to play with it, so I can really figure out what to do with it. Next, I would try my hand with some software I understand. Something like porting the functionality of an open source encrypted password manager to work on Android. After getting some real-world experience, I'm going to try and work on porting an iPhone app to Android. A co-worker of mine has created the app on his iPhone and I wanted to port it to Android. I wouldn't need the latest hardware, and the Verizon version would work best to just replace my current phone.

I should win because I can't afford to travel and I only program as a hobbyist, but I would be a voracious developer with the right device. My apps would be all about productivity. How about a twitter app that interacts with evernote? How about a GTD based app that sends your todo list to you via email/SMS and Twitter?

Besides that, I am a school librarian who has faced nothingbut budget cuts and has been watching my program get gutted this spring. It would be an awesome pick me up gregg.martinson@gmail.com

An interesting concept. Good luck!

I built walksquare, a finalist in recent "move your app" challenge. Though it didn't win, I am continuing to further develop it. In addition, I am planning to develop a more inclusive mobile-based springboard for good actions: actionsquare.

As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Good micro-actions can be shared and encouraged through actionsquare. Check in for good actions!

Luke you are a sound thinker -- I like the maximum impact angle. Good luck!

Developers mostly don't need a phone to develop with. That's what the emulator is for. Unless they need special access to the hardware.

I'll tell you who's a worthy recipient for the HTC EVO: TriDroid. That thing would be sweet for demonstrating phone stuff on the big screen at meetups, something that's currently quite hard. And I could loan it out to developers that actually need the capabilities between meetings. And I'd tell everyone who donated it so you gain notoriety! Win?

That sounds frustrating! Good luck!

I would love to develop an Android version of our CTeWriter (http://myctewriter.com/) app. We submitted the iPhone app to Apple for approval three months ago and haven't gotten the green light yet!

That's hot! Good luck!

I like the doing well by doing good approach. Good luck!

Phonebooth app for Android with the following features:

* Making outbound calls with Caller ID masked with Phonebooth number
* Visual voicemail
* Change Find Me, Follow Me settings (personal call routing)
* Initiate a conference call by selecting from contact list

I would like to win one.

I want to build an interface to my startup, neverend media. It is a subscription, electronic book with social media built in. It is a game-changer for tech books, tech books, etc. At the moment, though, the company is cash poor, so any little bit will help. www.neverendmedia.com.

Chris

P.S. When I'm done with it I will donate it to charity.

Just sent it to the CCC email list...

Another sound pursuit! Good luck!

Thanks! Pass along the word to any iPhone developers you might know that are curious about how the other 1/3 live :)

Thanks man. That's just how I roll.

Would love the Android phone for extending my location based mobile advertising sdk: AdSpeek from being just on the iPhone to Android as well.

Get free Android phones for dev y'all. Very cool of you Jay! An inspiration to me.

I like the vision statement --- and the healthcare aspect. Good luck!

You rock Jay. Awesome idea and great use of the free swag.

I believe Android will soon eclipse iPhone. I have unsuccessfully tried to teach myself Objective-C and create iPhone apps. Part of the issue is I do not own a Macbook. I deserve to win the phone (I dont want both), so I can develop an Android Healthcare app, sell it to make enough money to buy a Macbook Pro and revel in the true mobile developer convergence.

Roger that! Good luck!

Going from 160 to 1.6M is admirable! Good luck!

I like your out of the "box" thinking! Best of luck!

I'll drop a plug for my little endeavor. Wine by the Bar is (awkwardly) available in the Android market. Seems like I hit the Android bandwagon a bit early, though, and the app has fallen on rough times with the lack of newer hardware to test barcode scanning and wine label pics. (Simulator only goes so far!) A device to clear the dust from the app would be beyond fantastic.

Working for many months of evenings on the iPhone/iPod version of the app which is almost complete. I soooo miss the Android! Release-and-iterate has never been so appealing. Get me out of Apple's litter box! Please!

P.S. Saw this via Wayne Sutton's tweet.

Great Free Android phone contest idea @qthrul - I'm no developer but you know how @TriOut could use either phone. :) #fudge

Great reasoning. Best of luck!

I'll be in and around the NC area for a few weeks. Where do the cool kids imbibe these days?

while I don't need the phone (I've already got a N1), I have to say this is super awesome of you qthrul. BTW, next time you're in town, drop a line and we'll grab a beer or something.

I'm working on some Android games, to be built on an open-source game framework I'm also developing: chum (http://github.com/jslade/chum). I wrote the game engine for CowPotato (http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com...), which unfortunately appears to be broken on newer devices. More phones == more testing, better games for all.

I am deserving of one of these phones, because Iu00e2u0080u0099ll put it to good use. Iu00e2u0080u0099m just an aspiring Android developer. I only have one app in the market, and it only has 160 installs. Lately Iu00e2u0080u0099ve stopped sleeping and spend my nights reading (falling) through the rabbit hole that is developer docs and learning about everything from the XML layouts to the .aidl services. Despite all the challenges, I havenu00e2u0080u0099t given up and will continue to develop the best apps I can. Another android device besides my personal phone will give me more platforms to test my code on.

What will I develop? Among other things, Iu00e2u0080u0099m working towards building an app like http://www.mostawesomestthingever.com
People love to pass judgment. Give 'em an app to do just that.
