Jay Cuthrell fediverse digest

My Fediverse Digest for December 2022

A monthly digest of my thoughts, links, and updates from the Fediverse for December 2022.

And… the answer is money/time.

https://buttondown.email/comparisons/substack

$29/month
5000 subscribers

This could cover the ~2000 subscribers I have now but… I don’t charge for my newsletter so that would be an out of pocket cost.

Worst best case?

Professional
$79/month
10000 subscribers

Or, I roll up my sleeves and plug in something else like Mailtrain v2.

Decisions.

I think I’m going to punt… on a couple fronts and simplify this.

Punt: Netlify blog (fudge.org)

Punt: Substack newsletter (sunday.fudge.org)

Plan: Move everything to Buttondown as the new simplified fudge.org

Migrate: My blog posts (mdx but mostly markdown)

Migrate: My newsletter posts to see how awful the export/import turns out to be getting off of Substack or prior archives from Revue, wget, curl, etc…

Deadline: TBD

Yak shaving attempts so far for both Substack export and Buttondown import are…. Ouch. 🤬
Granted, I might be ignorant and missing a key step. 🤨
While Buttondown RSS import seems to work, the caveat that RSS support on Substack only returns the most recent 20 posts. 🤪
I’ll eventually figure this migration out because that’s what I do but the Substack export pattern is only slightly less awful than Revue (at the time) lacking any export at all. 🤷‍♂️

I might begin to pick one headline or two from Techmeme here each day to weigh in… similar to the way I once did elsewhere ephemerally that could be captured by Techmeme.

Example from 2021: https://www.techmeme.com/210809/p24#a210809p24

Why?

I noticed Techmeme references being aggregated from a Mastodon instance (and different screenshots indicate Techmeme editors are evolving on Tweets vs. More for crosspost vs. non-crosspost Mastodon – neat!)

So… I’m not saying I predicted this but I kinda expected this:

Revue (Twitter’s former acqui-hire of a newsletter service) is shutting down soon.

“We’ll cut to the chase: from January 18, 2023, it will no longer be possible to access your Revue account. On that date, Revue will shut down and all data will be deleted. This has been a hard decision because we know Revue has a passionate user base, made up of people like you.”

To be clear, one of the things I consider is the collection of ‘the little things’ as an indicator when I suspect a service is not long for this world.

Seeing this kind of ‘FAIL’ when any service is simply sending email when said service business model is literally about sending email is an example of ‘the little things’

Try to imagine a future where science fiction is wrong about everything except the most banal details.

Perhaps off world references of science fiction simply will be the balkanization of technologies, practices, and ethics that are contained to a very much on world sovereign landmass.

It’s no wonder so-called tech visionaries wanted to seastead as if Lord of the Flies was an instruction manual.
