My Fediverse Digest for July 2024
A monthly digest of my thoughts, links, and updates from the Fediverse for July 2024.

My 4th of July message is that I have tried and often failed to become independent from Chrome. I really have.
I have tried to stay with Safari. But, in the SaaS world if you use a service long enough you find edge case show stoppers.
Support forums are littered with these kinds of messages:
“I was using Safari and getting this error message […] with each attempt to access [… some functionality …] but when I tried again in Chrome it worked on the first attempt.”
Safari = Firefox too.

#mastodonadmin note on v4.2.10
use “yarn add install” vs. “yarn install”
YMMV

Looks like the GenAI stack for LinkedIn is kicking into high gear. Two of these 15 minutes apart today with different names and ending messages
“Hi [first name that I never use], I’m [randomly generated name] and I love some of your recent content. [random request to connect or question about my career].”

The ability of various consumer grade A.I. to “pick up” within days on the statistical nuance of a math expression vs. a prime number vs. a string cross referenced to a recent series news of news articles vs. online brigading for lulz is worth pondering.
Now we must await the obligatory FiveThirtyEight conspiracy chatter kicks into high gear as A.I. feasts upon Reddit, Facebook, and the rest of the dankweb.

If you are sending a newsletter, you really should be monitoring from a few different free email services to make sure your #spf, #dkim, and #dmarc are passing verification each time.
ConvertKit is great and so are other turnkey services in the email market but none are magic or omnipotent.
#dns is a brutal severe mistress.

A #mastodonadmin workaround
$ git diff -- app/controllers/auth/sessions_controller.rb
def home_paths(resource)
- paths = [about_path, ‘/explore’]
+ paths = [about_path, ‘/about’]
paths << short_account_path(username: resource.account) if single_user_mode? && resource.is_a?(User)
So, now when someone on the interwebs visits cuthrell.com it sends them to “about” instead of the default which was set to “explore” which is of little use for a single-user instance.

I chose #buttondown for my #newsletter due to its open #api. My API use has been limited so far, but I’m improving. If you’re starting out, learning from my experiences might be helpful. 🤓👇

A quick keyword scan of LinkedIn 2nd and +3rd degree connections posts sorted by time tells me that most anything shared online for the next few months by anyone I don’t know personally is going to be a dumpster fire of echo chamber amplification.

Kudos to GitHub.
#github is proceeding with their announcement of requiring two-factor authentication (#2fa).
Within the next 45 days, GitHub users will no longer be able to disable 2FA.

💡 #notes on XYZ is dead
Bacronym D.E.A.D. as a progression with camelcase to indicate where a technology is… and capitalization to indicate the end of a cycle from dead to DEAD.
developed becomes Deployed
edge case becomes Enterprise
advisable becomes Alternatives
deprecated becomes Decommissioned
#wardleymap into ibles and ables of possible, permissible, sustainable, repeatable, and advisable — the implication being sometimes things are D.E.a.d. on arrival in most Enterpise businesses.

Upgrading a 2 year old Ubuntu LTS install on an old Intel based Apple device reminds me once again that Broadcom WiFi is getting easier but is still not easy in that having an Ethernet port tends to the inevitable chicken egg requirement to get far enough to restore WiFi functionality.

The year was 2024 and the Gmail app on iOS is doing the blank screen thing again.
This makes me want to go Microsoft 365 or at least consider alternatives to Gmail app.
